Huddersfield vegans buzzing about HIVE’s latest news

If you live in Huddersfield and have a vegan or vegetarian diet, you’re generally not badly done to. In fact, Huddersfield has recently been named the greenest town in the country when it comes to food!

Despite being comparatively spoilt for choice, customers of vegan eatery The Peppercorn on Trinity Street were saddened when owner Alex Vickers announced that they would be closing, with Christmas Eve being the final day of trading. Since 2017, The Peppercorn has been the top choice for home-cooked vegan food, traditional f*sh chips with mushy peas on Fridays, and beautiful bakes on the counter. They even ran a meal delivery service in lockdown to make sure their loyal customers could still get their Peppercorn fix!

Fans didn’t have long to wait for good news though, as this week Alex has announced that she will be working in the kitchen at HIVE Community Cafe on John William Street in the town centre.

Alex has been getting stuck in already!

HIVE founder Gabby Hurt is overjoyed to be joined by Alex, not least as they have known each other for a long time. Gabby said, “I first met Alex when we both started Kayes College on the same day in September 1986 and our paths have crossed many times over the years.

“I followed Alex’s journey when she owned and ran the beautiful Peppercorn Cafe, which recently sadly closed. However, this gave us at HIVE an opportunity to snap Alex up before anyone else, and we are thrilled to have her with us. Not only does Alex bring a wealth of experience and great recipes, her patience and love of what she does shine through every mouthful you taste.”

As well as taking charge of the kitchen, Alex will be supporting the volunteering and training that the cafe offers for adults with learning disabilities.

Alex said, “I’m excited to be part of HIVE’s journey; combining my two great passions – food and social care”.

The menu at HIVE has been updated to include more vegan and gluten-free options. HIVE is open 9:30 to 4:30 Monday to Saturday.
