Summer craft fair this weekend at Huddersfield Ukrainian Club

Local businesses gear up for a new summer craft fair to raise their spirits.

A Summer Craft Fair is to take place on Sunday 8th August 2021 supported by local collaborators, Crafty Baggage, Crafty Praxis, and Huddersfield Ukrainian Club.

Their aim is to promote local craft businesses and raise the spirits of the local community, post lockdown.

The free to enter event will feature over 20 stalls selling locally made items including pottery, handmade jewellery, glass work, artwork as well as various food and cake stalls and other activities.

The craft fair will be held at the Huddersfield Ukrainian Club, which is located in an amazing Victorian mansion. Not only is it a wonderful example of a textile magnate mansion, but it also boasts 3 acres of beautiful gardens. The club are also offering a historical tour to show the public its wonderful interior and give people an insight into the history of the property.

To make this event a fun family day as well as a craft fair, there will be a jazz band playing in the grounds, craft workshops, and lot of other activities. The club also has a petanque court and the chairman of the Huddersfield Petanque Club, Paul Simpkins, will be hosting demonstrations and advising people about the sport.

Kim Onyskiw, a local artist who also has Ukrainian heritage said: “I’m excited that my first event back since lockdown will be somewhere where I can not only show my love of art but also introduce people to the Ukrainian heritage that influences some of my work. It’ll be great to get to see customers face to face again, as well as my fellow crafters. This event will be a big boost for our small businesses”

Two of the organisers, Crafty Baggage and Crafty Praxis are no strangers to organising craft fairs. Debbie Ball and Katie Rayner, respective owners, regularly host craft workshops in the Bryam Arcade and at other venues. But after teaming up with the Ukrainian Club, it has provided them with a new springboard to showcase local craft businesses.

Petro Dorotiak, the event’s organiser from the Ukrainian clubs committee added: “Our club and many other similar venues have had their doors closed for too long. We wanted to put on an event for the local community which would also help small businesses. Teaming up with Debbie and Katie is the perfect solution.”

The craft fair will be held on Sunday 8 August, from 10am until 4pm. There is no entrance fee, and the venue has lots of free parking. For more information about the Huddersfield Ukrainian Club visit their Facebook Page at
