In this Small Business Spotlight we feature The Matchbox Studio based in Newsome. It’s a really new business ran by a young couple Callum and Lillie.
Can you introduce your business in 10 words or less?
Tattoo and Piercing Studio in Newsome.
How long has your business been running and what drove you to start it?
We have been open just over two weeks now and the main reason what drove us to start was our ambitions and passion towards tattooing and piercing. Callam the Tattoo Artist has been working in many tattoos studios from the age 16 and has managed to get his own studio by the age of 21, completing one of his main goals.
Where is your business based, and what led you to choose to be based there?
Our business is based in Newsome on the main Newsome Road, just a 15 minute walk from the town centre. We chose this location as it was easily accessible from the town centre and Holmfirth with a bus routine from both. It also appealed to us with the number of student accommodation in the area, which is mostly our target audience.
Describe your products / services. Are there any specific products / services you would like to feature?
In the studio the services we provide are body piercing and a range of traditional and custom tattooing. These are the two we specialise and feature in.
Do you have any employees?
There are only two of us at the Matchbox Studio, Callam the tattooist and Lillie the body piercer. We are a young couple who started the business together with a bunch of dreams and ambition!
What’s your favourite job/task that you do as part of your business, and why?
For both of us the best part of our job is meeting and socialising with the clients, it is nice to make them feel comfortable and welcome and offer them quality service. As a piercer I do enjoy the ear piercings and jewellery side of the job as you make people’s ears look pretty.
What impact has the pandemic/lockdown had on your business? Would you carry on with any of your new ways of working even when things are back to normal?
The pandemic was hard for both of us as neither of us could work but it did give us time to renovate the studio, it took the whole lockdown to get sorted but we did have an open date to look forward to. During this time, due to the unfortunate lack of work we were able to get Callams father who was a building trader to help with the build. It took us around 8 months to get it tradable as the building was dis-used for a number of years and almost derelict.
Where do you see yourself / your business in 5 years?
In 5 years we wish to be a Huddersfield staple for tattoo and body Piercing. Also hopes of another premises and give a chance for other upcoming artists a reputable place to work and show off their tallent. As for ourselves we want to be still loving what we do!
What piece of advice would you give to someone thinking of starting their own business?
Just go for it! Even if it gets hard, still stay positive and think about the overall outcome. Don’t be scared of asking for help along the way and don’t give up chasing your dreams.
Anything else you’d like to add?
We both know a tattoo and piercing studio can be quite intimidating to some, one of our main aspects is to take away the negative stigma. We want to offer a relaxed and easy environment to everyone, especially the younger crowd.
