Spotlight on…Kixx Huddersfield

Matthew from Kixx Huddersfield swaps floodlights for spotlights to tell us what they’re all about…

Can you introduce your business in 10 words or less?
Kixx inspires little ones to get active, make friends and have fun.

How long has your business been running, and what drove you to start it?
We started Kixx Huddersfield in April 2018 with 15 members, we now have over 400 members aged from 18 months to 10 years old.

Where is your business based, and what led you to choose to be based there?
We have several bases around Kirklees due to the nature of what we do. Our bases are: The Zone, Holmfirth Civic Hall, Northfield Hall, Denby Dale Pie Hall, Denby Dale Methodist Church, Golcar Scout Hut, Kick Off (Dewsbury), King James’ School (Almondbury)

What are your most popular items/services? Why do you think this is popular with customers?
Our Kixx Academies are what all grownups sign their little people up to. The reason the classes are so popular is because every class has an amazing coach who is an expert with teaching at that age, and designs age-appropriate classes that are high energy and above all else, FUN!

Do you have any employees?
We have a team of 12 coaches that cover all of the venues we coach at, and they are absolutely amazing. The reason we are so successful is because they genuinely care about what they do and have the children’s best interests at heart. So a huge massive thank you must go to: Coach Alex, Alice, Abigail, Aysha, Doran, Georgina, Harry, Hina, John, Owen, Summer and Wez!

What’s your favourite job/task that you do as part of your business, and why?
The favourite part of the job that we all do is the actual coaching of the classes. The reason for this is because we get to be big children and join in with the sessions so the children really feel our energy. It is also extremely rewarding to monitor and watch every child’s progression no matter where they are on the Kixx journey with us.

What impact has the pandemic/lockdown had on your business?  Would you carry on with any of your new ways of working even when things are back to normal?
The pandemic has had a massive impact as we have only been able to deliver our sessions in person for 3 months out of the last year. This is obviously difficult for the little people we teach as all children require routine especially in their really early years. We are super excited to start back as soon as the current lockdown is lifted and can’t wait to see all of our existing members and lots of new members too.

Where do you see yourself/your business in 5 years?
In 5 years we would like to be a real heartbeat within the community and on the tip of everyones tongues when people are looking to get their littles ones into some kind of activity outside of nursery/school. We aspire to be the biggest provider of children’s activities in Huddersfield and have a genuine positive impact on every child we serve.

What piece of advice would you give to someone thinking of starting their own business?
Take the risk and start it! If it is what you’re genuinely passionate about you will succeed! (how success looks for you is different for each person)

Anything else you’d like to add?
We would just like to note that in December 2020, Kixx and all of its members raised almost £5000 for Kirkwood Hospice with the first ever Reindeer Run, which will now be an annual event.
