It could be said that what Dr Maxine Stead doesn’t know about health and wellness is not worth knowing. From a background in cancer research to opening and running a popular spa that specialises in taking care of mental and physical wellbeing, she certainly has plenty of experience to share!
Can you introduce your business in 10 words or less?
An online resource to improve people’s mental wellness.
How long has your business been running, and what drove you to start it?
I launched the business in February 2021. I came up with the concept during the first lockdown when my other business, Alexandra House Spa, was closed. My aim was to help people to understand more about the mind-body connection and to see how we have the ability to change our mindset and live with more positivity. I wanted to share my scientific and spiritual background to give people the tools to stop letting stress and fear take over their lives and to bring themselves more health and happiness.
Where is your business based, and what led you to choose to be based there?
My business is online.
What are your most popular items/services? Why do you think this is popular with customers?
People have been enjoying my weekly wellness videos with tips and inspiration to improve their mental wellness. Subscribers to my online course, Inner Balance, are also enjoying the masterclasses and meditations in the course and are starting to approach life from a different perspective.
It’s been a tough year for everyone and many people have struggled with the restrictions and imposed changes to their lives. Generally, many people feel stressed, anxious or overwhelmed by life’s challenges and are seeking help but don’t always know where to turn. My resources help people to make positive life changes and help them live with more peace and calm in their life. The resources are great for people who might be feeling stuck, uninspired or unsatisfied with their life and who want to learn how to better understand themselves and feel more empowered to create a better life.
Do you have any employees?
No, just me!
What’s your favourite job/task that you do as part of your business, and why?
I actually love creating my weekly wellness videos. I keep them quite short and focussed as I’ve realised I don’t have a long attention span when I’m watching videos and so they’re only a few minutes long but packed with ideas and tips. I’m enjoying creating guided meditations too and will be launching my meditations on my YouTube channel soon.
What impact has the pandemic/lockdown had on your business?
I guess without the lockdown I wouldn’t have had the time to create this business, so in a way, I’m grateful for the time to have been able to work on my course, my website and my social media channels.
Where do you see yourself/your business in 5 years?
I’ve got loads of ideas for new online courses and meditations which can be accessed by people across the globe, so I see the business expanding greatly. I’m planning a couple of books too and would like to do podcasts with other people working in the wellness industry. I’m working with some local businesses to set up a wellness shop on my website too and so plan to expand those collaborations too.
What piece of advice would you give to someone thinking of starting their own business?
Follow your heart. When I decided to set up my spa, everyone in my life thought I was crazy and advised against it. But I knew it was the right thing to do and I’ve never regretted it. Also, don’t be strayed by people wanting to take your business in a different direction – it’s your business and you have to do what feels right for you, and not be driven by other people’s views.
