Kiki Mistry (Managing Director) brings some order to the Caos in this Small Business Spotlight…
Can you introduce your business in 10 words or less?
Artist Management & Record Label that is just as passionate about music as our artists. (editor note: that’s 15 words, but we’ll let you off!)
How long has your business been running, (if it’s a new business, when do you plan to open?) and what drove you to start it?
We officially launched on the 1st of February 2021*, where we announced our first artist signing, Huddersfield’s own Boxteles. My dad ran an independent label in the late 90s/00s in Detroit so since I was a little girl, this was something I dreamed of being a part of. Unfortunately, he had other plans and was not able to continue the business.
Fast forward through this pandemic, I decided to relaunch Caos to help regenerate the industry for independents and artists in our area who just need that little push to get further in their career. The music industry has always been a struggle to get into, but this pandemic has really shattered many hopes and dreams of musicians as well as other industry professionals. The big push for me to do this was that the pandemic had gotten so bad that creatives were being told to retrain. And whilst I can appreciate that message behind this to ensure a stable income, I felt that this was extremely hurtful to the people within the creative industries. I guess this was me being a tad rebellious – I truly believe this industry will come out of this better than before and I want to be a part of it.
*We have been registered since 2014 as my dad wanted to relaunch Caos but he just had no time with running two other businesses. We have been slowly working on Caos since then, but I now say that our launch date is the 1/2/2021.
Please note – Caos Music Ltd. is a department of Caos Music & Film Company Ltd. The full business will be announced at the end of this year.
Caos Music Ltd's first artist signing, Boxteles. Their new single is out on 19th February.
Where is your business based, and what led you to choose to be based there?
We are based at Majestic House in town centre but currently, as many office workers are, we are working from home. Our corporate offices for the other business we run is based there so we thought it fitting to have Caos located there as well.
What are your most popular items/services? Why do you think this is popular with customers?
We plan to offer many different services depending on the artist’s wants and needs. This could be anywhere from single/E.P. release campaigns, to record deals, to guidance in the form of management or even just helping with some advice. We will also be (when allowed) working with local venues, councils, charities etc. to put on events to showcase the vast amount of talent we have right here in Huddersfield. I think we tend to forget how incredible Huddersfield is with all the negativity out there.
Do you have any employees?
We are just a small team for now driven by people within and outside the music industry so we have a wide variety of skills we can offer to artists. I would announce our team now, but I have a (secret) plan to showcase each of them as they are the real reason Caos has been able to relaunch. Keep a watch on our socials over the next few months!
What’s your favourite job/task that you do as part of your business, and why?
There are so many! Listening to music, meeting new people (albeit via social media and Microsoft Teams), learning about musicians’ stories and the stories behind their music, gigs (soon….). I am a music lover, just as many people are. Discovering new music within and outside of my job is my favourite thing! And when I am not dealing with the corporate side of the business (which I do quite enjoy), this doesn’t feel like a job to me!
What impact has the pandemic/lockdown had on your business? Would you carry on with any of your new ways of working even when things are back to normal?
Even though this pandemic/lockdown has been terrible, it is the reason why Caos was able to be relaunched. We are joining the music industry as it is adapting so a lot of the ways we work will follow suit. I think working remotely will become the norm and places that we have been denied for so long & function rooms/rentable spaces will be used for meetings when necessary. I guess we will just have to see and adapt with the times!
Where do you see yourself/your business in 5 years?
This is a good one. We hope to have a multi-functional building that can provide recording studios, practice spaces and music video recording facilities in Huddersfield. There is potential to have a venue as well but I we will be focusing on partnering with music venues already operational in Huddersfield such as The Parish, Northern Quarter & Small Seeds. We would like to be known for providing incredible music across all genres, but most importantly, we want to be known for taking care of our artists, treating them like family and hard workers who will give our best to get artists where they need to be. And maybe in 10 years run a weekend music festival!
What piece of advice would you give to someone thinking of starting their own business?
Don’t let anyone (including yourself) tell you that you can’t do it. Learn from the people around you, accept constructive feedback with open arms, and have fun!
Anything else you’d like to add?
I do hope that the people of Huddersfield will accept us and enjoy all the exciting things we hope to share. Huddersfield already has such an incredible music scene that we just want to contribute to where we can.
