Off the record: Turntable Vinyl Cafe on Record Store Day & 1st birthday

Wickedly good milkshakes are one of the additions to the menu over the last year

We caught up with Matt Bell of Turntable Vinyl Cafe to talk about events coming up this weekend.

It’s been about a year since we shone our Small Business Spotlight on Turntable – tell us how it’s gone?
Our first year has been brilliant and absolutely terrifying in equal measure. It’s felt a little like walking into the dark not knowing what is lurking there at times, and that uncertainty has been tough to deal with, as it is for any business. Thankfully the people of Huddersfield seem to have really taken to us, we’ve been blown away by the response. I’m really proud of the team too, who’ve helped to grow the business.

Saturday (April 23rd) marks our 365th day of trading, which also happens to be Record Store Day 2022, so we’re having a joint celebration.

How have things changed since then?
We now offer more drinks, a wider variety and better quality of food and about 2500 more records than we did 12 months ago.

I’d like to say thank you to everyone who has bought a coffee, a record, a slice of cake or a toastie in the last 12 months. It genuinely means the world to me to have you as customers. Hopefully, The Turntable can continue to improve and offer more without compromising on the quality of what we already offer.

A few months ago we started doing Open Mic Sundays the first Sunday of the month and it’s been a really popular event, with performers and customers alike.

We’ve got some really exciting plans for the business for the next 12 months too so keep those eyes peeled! Also, shop local and indie!

Can you summarise Record Store Day (RSD) in 10 words or less?
RSD is a celebration of the physical formats of music.

You sold vinyl via an online shop before making the leap to a physical shop and cafe. How does it feel to be able to take part in RSD for the first time as a store owner?
We’re delighted to finally be taking part in RSD. It was one of the things we most looked forward to when we were dreaming of opening The Turntable and for it to be taking place on the 365th day the shop has been open is wonderful! It feels really nicely balanced, a lovely way to end our first year and start our second.

What can people expect when they come down on Saturday?
To celebrate all things Turntable we’re going to have live music throughout the day, RSD22 releases, grilled cheese, coffee, cakes, RSD beer from Meantime Brewing and Pieminister pie and peas!

Performers will include Ben Robinson ( @benrobinsonmusic) and Hannah Robinson-Wright (@hannahrobinsonwright AKA Hannah Eats Huddersfield @ HT), Lewis Crossley (@lewiscrossleymusic) and Poppy Thomason accompanied by Daisy.

We have over 120 of the RSD22 releases, all the best stuff! If you want to get your hands on some, you can find out how to go about it on our event page here.

Team HT wishes all at Turntable a very happy 1st birthday and hope that RSD22 is a great day!
