Kirklees Year of Music 2023 is pleased to announce its next panel event in collaboration with local musician Pat Fulgoni, teaming up with Love Music Hate Racism (LMHR).

The event will be held at BASSment Studios in Huddersfield on Wednesday 23rd March from 5:30pm. Discussions will focus on addressing the issues of racism still present in the music industry and the role that music plays in the stand against racism.

The panel will feature Zak Cochrane of LMHR, Rick Blackman the author of Babylon’s Burning and Chris Inperspective of Black Junglist Alliance and R&S Records. Tickets for the event are free and can be secured via Eventbrite

Following the panel event, there will be a full concert performance as part of LMHR’s Rebel Music Tour 2022. More details can be found here

Love Music Hate Racism uses the energy and vibrancy of the music scene to promote unity and celebrate diversity through education and events. The organisation’s message is there is more that unites us than divides us, and nothing demonstrates this more than music.

Whatever the genre, music is living testimony to the fact that cultures can and do mix. Music has the power to unite, to give strength and to effect positive social change. Racism, on the other hand, weakens us; it creates barriers and turns friends and neighbours against one another. Sadly, racism is on the rise in the UK and internationally. LMHR believe that if we work together, we can harness the power of music to stop this destructive force in its tracks.

Pat Fulgoni, whose track record includes developing all Yorkshire showcases at SXSW Music Festival, USA says: “Following on from our well-received ‘Touring in the EU’ panel with the Musicians Union, Carry on Touring and Mayor Tracy Brabin, I am happy to be able to work with Kirklees Year Of Music in this way. Love Music Hate Racism are running an inspired national campaign with the backing of major stars including Stormzy, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Lianne La Havas, Royal Blood and Kwabs. Racism really has no place in the music industry and it’s great to be able to present this special seminar and tour date in Huddersfield”

Sarah Hutton, Music Industry Coordinator at Kirklees Year of Music adds: “This panel event is another really exciting opportunity for local musicians and those involved in the industry across the region to get involved in a huge topic and help shape the future.

“For Huddersfield to be a part of this tour and to also have this exclusive panel with Love Music Hate Racism is great, as it’s the only Yorkshire based event alongside London, Manchester, Glasgow, Bristol and Swansea. We’d love to see a big representation of our region there on the night to share their views and experiences and hear from our panel of experts.”
