Local Election 2021: Summary of results

The votes have been counted across Kirklees, and we now have the full results of both the local and mayoral elections.

As previously reported by Huddersfield Times, the Mayoral election is held using a ‘supplementary voting system’. This means voters could cast up to two votes for this election.

Elected Mayor of West Yorkshire

Tracy Brabin, Labour is elected as the first ever Mayor of West Yorkshire.

Her victory comes after no candidate achieved a 50% majority in the first preference votes triggering a counting of all second preference votes between Brabin and closest contender Matt Robinson (Con). This finally gave Brabin the majority of 59.8% meaning that she was elected as the Mayor of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Brabin is also the first female elected Mayor in England. As Mayor, Brabin will have to resign her Westminster seat triggering a by-election in Batley & Spen.
