On the 13th of August, Lindley Grange Bupa Care Home, in Huddersfield, will be raising money and awareness for Dementia UK, as a much-loved staff member takes part in a sponsored haircut.
Dave Nott is a Kitchen Assistant who has been working at the home for five years, three of which were as a caregiver. He aims to raise £1000 before having his hair cut that he’s been growing for nine years. If he reaches the ambitious target, Dave has promised to dye what is remaining of his hair blue in celebration.
When asked why Dementia UK was his chosen charity, Dave said: “This is really close to my heart. I’ve worked in care homes for many years and have seen the impact dementia can have on those that have to live with it, as well as their families.
“Similarly, my mother has also developed dementia in recent years, and although it isn’t severe, I can see first-hand within my immediate family what the effects can be. So I feel it is incredibly important, not only to donate to these causes but also to help provide a springboard for further awareness to help educate more people on the disease and how we can better support those living with it.”
Dementia UK focuses on a cause close to the hearts of many members of staff and residents at Lindley Grange. According to the charity, by 2025, there will be one million people living with dementia in the UK. So the Bupa care home wanted to support the group with its vital work in helping patients and their families.
The donations will bolster the activities of Dementia UK for the support they provide, such as covering the costs of setting up a new volunteer or providing specialist Admiral nurses for dementia patients.
Commenting further on the fundraising efforts, Julie Parker, Home Manager at Lindley Grange, said: “We’re incredibly proud of Dave for taking part in the fundraising initiative and supporting such an amazing charity. Bupa has kindly agreed to match our fundraising efforts, so we look forward to sharing our total with the Dementia UK once the challenge is complete.”
