Kirklees Council has issued a rare cross-party statement showing support to Ukraine following the events of recent days.
The latest figures show that the Russian invasion has so far claimed the lives of 198 Ukrainians according to the Health Minister.
In the cross-party statement, Kirklees leaders said:
“Our thoughts, prayers and sympathies are with the people of Ukraine at this difficult time. The disturbing events of the last two days have been felt across Europe, the world, and also here in Kirklees.
“We are proud of our Ukrainian community in Kirklees. They enrich our district and make Kirklees the vibrant and welcoming place we know it is. We want the Ukrainian residents of Kirklees to know they have our unwavering support.”
The statement was issued by Cllr Shabir Pandor (Leader of the Council and Leader of the Labour Group), Cllr David Hall (Leader of the Conservative Group), Cllr John Lawson (Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group), Cllr Andrew Cooper (Leader of the Green Group), Cllr Charles Greaves (Leader of the Independent Group).
