Right to Roam – Commoners Choir & Johnny Campbell

Huddersfield trad-folk musician Johnny Campbell joins forces with Leeds-based Commoners Choir at this single release event on April 23rd.

The single in question – A Right to Roam – also features Skelmanthorpe Brass Band and former Chumbawamba lead guitarist Boff Whalley.

As the title may suggest, the single focuses on the ‘right to roam’ – essentially meaning that anyone and everyone can access open countryside regardless of ownership.  Woodlands can be walked in, rivers and lakes can be swum in.  Essentially any open countryside can be used for the purposes of recreation.

In England only 8% of the countryside is able to be freely accessed,  paling in comparison to the open access that is enjoyed in countries such as Sweden, Norway, Estonia and Scotland.

The increased popularity of countryside walks and wild swimming over the last couple of years has highlighted just how limited our access is in England, and the Right to Roam campaign wants to change that.

The single celebrates those who fought for – and continue to fight for – the right to roam in this country.  Johnny Campbell
The release coincides with the 90th anniversary of the ‘Kinder Trespass’, a peaceful, coordinated protest whereby three groups approached Kinder Scout in the Derbyshire Peak District from different directions, converging on the moorland plateau on April 24th 1932.

Tickets for the event are available here via EventbriteCrowdfunding of the single itself is ongoing, and close to hitting its target.  If you’d like to contribute, you can check out the Kickstarter here.
