Back To School – changes to young people’s bus travel

Changes to weekly and monthly bus travel for young people.

It’s Monday morning, and for many across Huddersfield it’s the day in which young people return to schools and colleges.

However, parents and young people are being reminded of changes to young people’s bus travel which came into effect at the end of July.

From 25th July 2021, travel across the bus network has been simplified in a bid to make it easier for young people to travel across West Yorkshire.

As part of the changes, individual operators will no longer sell their weekly tickets for young people. Instead, young people can now ‘top-up’ their Under-19 Photocard with MyDay, MyWeek or MyMonth travel.

The MyDay ticket is available to purchase on-board the bus, however the MyWeek and MyMonth can’t be bought on board. The easiest way to buy these tickets is by downloading the M-Card Mobile App. Tickets can then be purchased and stored on the app. Alternatively, they can also be purchased from Metro Travel Centres, M-Ticket machines or at most Payzone stores.

As part of the changes, bus fares have also been streamlined into 3 simple fares for young people. Depending on the length of the journeys, one-way fares will either be 60p, £1.20 or £1.80, with most journeys costing no more than £1.20.

These changes are only for young people, and individual operator’s weekly and monthly tickets for adults are still available to purchase.
