Awards ceremony celebrate young people in care across Kirklees

Kirklees Council celebrated the achievements of children in care and care leavers with a fantastic event – which featured some special guests.

The Achieve Awards saw 310 young people nominated for their personal successes, including academic achievements, maintaining their school or college place in difficult circumstances, securing and maintaining a tenancy, moving to university, engaging well with professionals and being committed to make a positive change in their lives.

The attendees enjoyed a fabulous night at Huddersfield Town Hall which featured performances on stage from the care leavers themselves, whilst friends and family members were also on hand to help them celebrate.

Michael Hefele (Huddersfield Town) and Mel Tiernan (Kirklees Council Children’s Services) at the Achieve Awards.

Among the guests were Huddersfield Town star Michael Hefele, Pulse Radio presenters Danny Mylo and Rosie Madison, Cllr Viv Kendrick (Kirklees Cabinet member for Children), and Cllr Nigel Patrick (Mayor of Kirklees).

Cllr Kendrick said: “Our young people are truly exceptional and I was thrilled to be a part of this uplifting event to celebrate their achievements. We know our looked after children and care leavers often face many challenges, which makes them an inspiration to us all.

“It’s very important to us that they have all the opportunities and support they need to fulfil their goals and ambitions. It’s paramount that all children and young people across Kirklees are supported to have the best start in life.”
